City of Marseille

Nestled between sea and hills, Marseille is an amazing city that moves with the seasons and passions. Founded 2600 years ago, the oldest city in France combines the richness of a unique heritage, an intense cultural life, and an exceptional location.

It is a port city with a strong identity, and has also kept abreast of the changes throughout time to become an important capital of the Mediterranean Basin open to the world.

Crossroads of civilizations and trade since ancient times, Marseille possesses a nature, land and sea heritage unique in its diversity. These assets, combined with a city in metamorphosis, have generated a vigorous revival of economic activity and has placed the city among the most popular tourist destinations.

General Services Department of the City includes the Department of International and European Relations (DRIE) that manages European Programs since several years. These programs aim to support cooperative relations. This is particularly the case with the City of Tripoli and the Al Fayhaa Urban Community in Lebanon and Aqaba in Jordan. The cooperation developed with these two cities covers several aspects as governance, ICT, coastal engineering and tourisme promotion. The City of Marseille has also strong links with the Municipality of Genoa thanks to their twinning in 1958.

The sea and coastal service of the City of Marseille provides the technical expertise in this project and is willing to share its experience in the governance of coastal zones.

The City of Marseille is the partner #3 of the MEDSEATIES project.
